Should You Repair or Replace an Old Wood Fence?

new wood fence for yard

Has your old wood fence seen better days? A poorly maintained wood fence can look dilapidated and reduce your home’s curb appeal. However, it can be challenging deciding if you should repair your existing fence or invest in a new one. Here’s some decision-making help.

When to Repair an Old Wooden Fence

Inspect the wood for signs of rot, which usually begins at the bottom of the boards near the ground. Take note of any cracks or holes. Also, look for discolouration, warping, splintering or leaning. Fill the cracks and holes with wood filler. You may need to replace warped boards, beams or posts.

Your fence may still be under warranty. If that’s the case, the contract should cover the repairs. If you lack the time, tools or know-how, you can always call a professional fencing contractor to repair your wood fence.

When to Replace a Wood Fence

If a fence goes neglected for several years, it may be wise to replace it. If you find that more than a quarter of the wood fence boards need replacing, you’re better off replacing the entire structure. Another indication that it’s time to replace your fence is signs of being ravaged by insects such as termites or carpenter ants. Also, damage from a vehicle or falling trees can compromise the fence’s structural integrity, and you should probably replace it.

Also consider the age of the wood. Here are some lifespan estimates:

  • Spruce: 4 to 7 years

  • Pine: 5 to 12 years

  • Cedar: 15 to 30 years

  • Treated lumber: 20+ years

If your wood fence is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, it would be more cost-effective to replace it rather than repair it.
